    What is an Event Loop? Definition, How It Works, and Examples

    In computer science, an event loop is a programming construct or design pattern that waits for events or messages and dispatches them to their corresponding handlers.

    The event loop asks an internal or external event provider for new events (often blocking until one arrives) and then calls the relevant event handler.

    This pattern underpins asynchronous and event-driven programming: the loop runs continuously, processing queued tasks and allowing programs to react to user actions, I/O, or timers without blocking the main thread.

    How the Event Loop Works

    Although implementations vary across platforms and languages, most event loops follow a similar algorithm:

    1. Call Stack: A program begins by executing code on the call stack. When synchronous code runs, the interpreter proceeds line by line.
    2. Asynchronous Tasks: When code initiates an asynchronous operation—such as a timer, network request, or I/O operation—a callback function is registered, and the engine continues executing other code.
    3. Task Queue: Upon completion, the asynchronous operation places a task (also known as a macrotask) into a queue. Examples include timers, I/O callbacks, and user interface events.
    4. Event Loop Cycle: The event loop continuously checks if the call stack is empty. If it is, it pulls the oldest task from the queue and pushes it onto the call stack for execution.
    5. Microtasks: After executing each task, the event loop drains the microtask queue—a higher-priority queue for promise resolutions and other related tasks—before moving on to the next task in the main task queue.
    6. Run-to-Completion: Each job, whether from the task or microtask queue, runs to completion before another job can begin. This guarantees a predictable execution order and prevents preemption.

    The process repeats endlessly: the engine sleeps when there are no tasks, consuming minimal CPU, and wakes when new events arrive.

    This design prevents blocking and ensures responsive applications, but long-running tasks should be broken into smaller pieces to avoid freezing the event loop.

    Event Loop Examples and Use Cases

    The event loop pattern is used in many different contexts:

    • JavaScript and Node.js: In browsers, JavaScript runs on a single thread. The event loop manages callbacks for user interactions, timers, network requests, and promise resolutions. Node.js uses an event loop with multiple phases (timers, I/O callbacks, poll, etc.) to handle file system and network operations efficiently without blocking the main thread.
    • GUI Frameworks: Desktop toolkits (e.g., Qt, Cocoa) and mobile platforms (iOS, Android) use event loops to process user input, paint updates, and system messages. The loop retrieves messages from the operating system’s message queue and dispatches them to the appropriate widgets or controllers.
    • Server Applications: High-performance web servers and networking frameworks (e.g., Nginx) rely on event loops to handle thousands of concurrent connections efficiently. The loop monitors file descriptors for events via system calls and dispatches I/O events as they occur.
